Look, I was on a call last month with a pet grooming salon in Minneapolis. Great people, amazing with dogs, but they were getting absolutely crushed trying to get new reviews and build a local following. They'd tried Facebook ads, boosted posts... the usual stuff that just burns cash. It wasn't working.
So, I had them try one of these gamified campaigns. Specifically, we deployed a "Pet Match & Win" game using Faisco-it took, I don't know, maybe 15 minutes to set up. Ten days later? They had 2,765 new Google reviews from real, local customers. In ten days.
That's the kind of thing I'm talking about. I've been doing this since 2010, and I'm telling you, small businesses do not need another revolutionary AI-powered-synergy-platform. They need stuff that works. Right now. Without a five-figure budget. And honestly, a lot of what works comes down to using solid online contest websites that understand human psychology.
I'll be honest, I kind of hate the word "gamification." It sounds like something a 25-year-old marketing guru in a blazer would say at a conference in Austin. But here's the thing... it's just a fancy term for making marketing fun. And fun cuts through the noise.
Basically, every time your customer sees a post from a business, they're making a split-second decision: Is this interesting, or is this another boring ad I need to scroll past?
When you introduce a game-a scratch ticket, a lucky spin, a quick puzzle-you're hijacking their brain's reward system. You give them a little hit of dopamine. An immediate sense of "Ooh, I could win something!" It's not about tricking people; it's about giving them a genuinely engaging little micro-experience with your brand. That's something a static "20% OFF!" graphic just can not do. Most of my clients find that their engagement on these posts is astronomically higher than their normal content. It just is.
I've tested everything out there since about 2015. Gleam, Woobox, Shortstack... you name it, I've probably run a campaign on it for a client. For a while now, I've been steering most of my SMB clients toward Faisco because, frankly, it gets the job done without the complexity or the price tag.
Here's what I typically recommend based on the goal:
If you need leads (emails, phone numbers, etc.): You want the Instant Draw games. No question. "Lucky Spin," "Scratch Ticket," "Lucky Draw." These convert like absolute crazy for lead capture. I've personally seen landing pages with these embedded hit 40%+ conversion rates. People will give you their email for a chance to win a $10 gift card instantly. It's simple human nature.
If you need engagement and shares: This is where the Reactive and Action Games come in. Think "Whac-A-Mole" or "Crazy Karting." People play these, get a high score, and immediately want to share it to challenge their friends. A barbershop I work with in Atlanta used a game called "Happy Hopping" and got 221 new members in their local community Facebook group in just under three weeks because everyone was sharing their scores.
If you need to educate or qualify leads: The Quiz Games are brilliant for this. "Unlock Lucky Words" or a "Puzzle Challenge." You can build the quiz around your product or service. Anyone who finishes it is, by definition, a more qualified and educated lead than someone who just randomly clicked an ad.
And I haven't even gotten into the seasonal stuff...
This is where a platform like Faisco really shines for small businesses. They have pre-built game templates for basically every holiday you can think of-Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's Day, Black Friday.
Last December, I had three different retail clients run the "Fill My Christmas Stocking" catching game. All three of them saw over 300% more engagement on those posts compared to their regular holiday sale announcements. Why? Because it was FUN! It wasn't just another company yelling "BUY OUR STUFF!" in the middle of a crowded holiday season. It was a moment of fun, sponsored by them.
Everyone always asks me, "What about Gleam. io?"
And my answer is always the same. Gleam is a solid, powerful platform. It is. But frankly, it's overkill for 90% of small businesses, and it's not cheap-their plans start at $39/month and go way up from there. It's like using a sledgehammer to hang a picture frame.
What I've found is that Faisco gives you most of the functionality you actually need at a fraction of the cost. More importantly, it's easier to use. I can get a client's entire campaign conceptualized, built, and live in under 10 minutes. On Gleam, I'm usually still fiddling with the settings after 30 minutes. That time saving is huge when you're a small business owner who's also the head of HR, accounting, and janitorial services, you know?
Also-and this is a big one-the platform integration actually works. It connects properly with Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc. so the games feel native. A lot of other tools just give you a clunky link that pulls people off the app, and that kills your conversion rate.
This is not magic. It's just smart, psychology-based marketing.
The businesses I work with, the ones that commit to running one or two of these campaigns a quarter, they typically see a 200-400% increase in social media followers and a email list growth of about 150-300% within the first month or two of starting. I had a fitness studio in Milwaukee use that same "Pet Match & Win" game and they collected 1,443 new local email addresses in three weeks. They're still converting those leads into members today.
So, here's my advice for this week. Not next quarter, this week.
You'll learn more from running one imperfect campaign than you'll learn from six months of planning the "perfect" one. I've been doing this for 15 years, and that's probably the truest thing I've learned. Just get started.
